Holidaymakers heading to Ireland this summer, many of whom will take out holiday insurance, should take their bathing suits to County Mayo for some good clean fun, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA report for 2005 found that the county has some of the best quality bathing water in Europe, the Western People reports.
Throughout 2005, 131 freshwater and seawater designated bathing areas, for visitors with and without holiday insurance, across Ireland were monitored and all of the beaches assessed in County Mayo were found to comply with EU standards.
EPA Programme Manager Gerard O’Leary, said: "The EPA [is] pleased to report that Irish bathing waters remain at a good standard not least in Mayo where 100 per cent of bathing waters assessed complied with both EU minimum mandatory standards and stricter guide values."
The beaches in County Mayo to which holidaymaker should take their sun hats and holiday insurance to include: Old Head Beach, Louisburgh, Silver Strand and The Harbour at Clare Island.
County Mayo also has been ten Blue Flag awards for its beaches and its life guarding service reportedly ranks among the best in Ireland.
