Visitors to Paris and other major cities in France are being advised to err on the side of caution as police wait to see if the rioting will die down over the holiday weekend. Speaking yesterday, President Jacques Chirac advised parents to keep their children at home and curfews are still in place after they were introduced as part of a series of emergency measures on Tuesday.
Authorities are now hopeful that the riots are on a downward trend, although national police chief Michel Gaudin said that "extra vigilance" would be exercised in Paris this weekend.
Commenting on the crisis, President Chirac said: "When the time comes, I will share with you my reflections on the entirety of the problem, but my priority is to first re-establish public order," reports the New York Times.
Based on a number of frustrations felt largely by people from ethnic minorities, the riots were triggered by the death of two teenagers who were electrocuted whilst running away from the police.
