Flight cancellations cause chaos in Italy

26 January 2006  Numerous flights have been cancelled this week due to continuing strikes by staff working for Italian airline Alitalia.

Causing severe delays to hundreds of passengers, the cancellations have resulted in six days of unrest and could lead to protestors being charged with disrupting public services.

Particular chaos has been caused at Rome's Fiumicino airport as many passengers were forced to leave the airport after alternative flights could not be arranged.

For those without travel insurance the protests have caused particular problems as many passengers have been forced to find alternative means of transport, causing severe delays to their trips.

Picket lines blocking access to aircraft hangars where maintenance and security inspections are carried out have resulted in the largest number of cancellations.

Unions have said that their relationship with the airline has broken down irremediably and that there were no hopes of pursuing talks with Alitalia management.

The protestors believe that the management has failed to honour agreements made two years ago regarding labour cuts and restructuring plans.

Italy's opposition party, the Democratic Left, has called on the government to inform parliament as to what measures it will take to "avoid the possibility that the entire Italian transport system falls into an irreversible crisis", Ansa reports.
