Families heading to Europe have been advised to not rely solely on their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for financial protection while away.The card offers reciprocal basic health care provision for members of EU states, but does not give any other type of cover.
Consequently, AA Travel Insurance has urged Britons to ensure they purchase adequate holiday insurance, in addition to remembering to take their EHIC with them on their European break.
Director of the firm Christian Young said: "I am concerned that people may just not bother with cover at all and rely on the EHIC reciprocal medical certificate - which used to be called the E111 - which is free from post offices."
He added that travellers should also remember to inform their holiday insurance provider of any pre-existing medical conditions they suffer from or any treatment they are currently receiving, to avoid invalidating their policy.
In June 2007, Saga warned that 29 per cent of Britons are not aware that the paper E111 form is no longer valid and must be replaced with the plastic EHIC.
