Heat wave conditions are gripping Europe at the moment, with several countries suffering from drought and severely depleted water supplies.While the UK, France and Belgium have seen temperatures soar this week, Italy, Spain and Portugal are suffering from drought.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the sweltering heat was a factor in the death of a 41 year-old marathon runner in Normandy, and northern France has seen record temperatures for this time of year.
As much as 80 per cent of Portugal is the victim of severe to extreme drought, according to its national water institute.
Meanwhile, in Spain, with water reserves at just half their capacity, the government has agreed to a loan of £497 million to help farmers.
Farmers in the northern Po Valley in Italy fear that water supplies will be exhausted by as soon as mid-July.
Earlier this month, Water UK said south-east England had only experienced 60 per cent of normal rainfall, putting it on a par with the droughts of 1976.
