An Egyptian ferry carrying around 1,300 people has sunk in the Red Sea, the head of the Egyptian Maritime Authority has confirmed. Officials report that 14 bodies and 12 survivors have so far been pulled from the sea.
The ferry, al-Salam 98, is believed to have sunk 40 miles off the Egyptian port of Hurghada on its way to the port of Duba in Saudi Arabia.
It is not known as yet what caused the accident, although overloading is unlikely be a contributing factor and the boat has met safety requirements in the past.
Search and rescue teams are looking for survivors, including four Egyptian frigates and the British naval ship HMS Bulwark.
Those on board include pilgrims returning from the annual Haj to Mecca as well as Egyptians working in Saudi Arabia.
A sister ship of al-Salam sank in October last year after it collided with a cargo ship at the entrance to the Suez Canal, killing two people and injuring 40 others.
