Eastern Europe 'increases in popularity for tourists'

Impending membership of the European Union (EU) is leading to Balkan countries becoming the most popular destinations among some tourists, according to a new study.A range of destinations in Romania have seen a surge in the number of people visiting while it prepares to join the EU and Bulgaria is now aiming to become another top Europe holiday spot this year, claims a travel agent.
DirectLine suggests that the Bulgarian tourist industry is gearing up for a ten per cent increase in the level of holidaymakers taking a trip this year to some of its most popular destinations, including the skiing resorts of Bansko and Borovets.
"Eastern Europe tourism in general, particularly in the Balkans, has been gaining popularity and represents great value for money when compared to its western European counterparts," says the company's sales manager, Alex Pilkington.
The spokesperson adds that tourist destinations in Bulgaria collectively posted record takings of almost ?1 billion (£681 million) in 2006 and it expects to receive another 5.6 million holidaymakers in its most popular towns and cities this year.
Skiing trips to resorts in eastern Europe such as Poiana Brasov in Romania and Lake Bled in Slovenia are becoming increasingly popular, although operators recommend holiday insurance is a must for such trips due to the number of accidents on the slopes.
