Blasts this week in Spain have highlighted the delicate situation between the Basque separatist group ETA and the Spanish authorities. Five bombs exploded on motorways around Madrid on Tuesday, destroying hopes that the group may be ready to declare a definitive ceasefire.
No one was injured in the attacks, which took place on the day Spain celebrated the 27th anniversary of its 1978 constitution, although they caused slight property damage and slowed traffic for much of the afternoon.
"This is the latest example of senseless violence and only confirms that we must continue to fight ETA with all the forces of the law and the democratic state," commented Spain's interior minister Jose Antonio Alonso.
A Ryanair flight from Stansted was diverted from Santander in northern Spain as the airport closed after a bomb alert, reports the Guardian.
More than 800 people have been killed in ETA bombings and other attacks over the past five years, although a fatal attack has not been carried out since May 2003.
