EHIC given the red card
31 May 2006  Insurers are warning football fans heading to Germany this year that European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are insufficient travel cover and are urging them to take out extra policies.

InsureandGo says that many people are misled by EHICs because they have the world insurance in their name, but they do not actually provide sufficient cover.

Visiting a doctor or getting prescription drugs in Germany, even with an EHIC, could land fans with large non-refundable medical bills, it claims.

Whilst having an EHIC is a good idea as a back up, fans should make sure they take out full travel insurance to cover any medical expenses should they fall ill.

Perry Wilson, director of InsureandGo, comments: "Whether you're off to Germany for a few days to see one game or you're planning to stay for the whole tournament, don't take the risk of not having travel insurance.

"With the EHIC you won't have a medical emergency line on hand 24 hours a day to take the worry away. And you also won't be covered should repatriation be required; if an item is lost or stolen or if you need to cancel your trip."

Many providers are offering attractive travel insurance policies in the run up to this year's World Cup tournament.
