Unforeseen circumstances which could cause sudden changes to holiday-makers' travel plans are always a possibility, and so it is important not only that people purchase holiday insurance but that they understand what they are covered for. Airline strikes or family illness can all affect holiday plans and that is when a good holiday insurance policy becomes invaluable, but there is no one rule of coverage and consumers should be aware of what they are buying, news provider Post Star reports.
Rita Nowakowski, travel center manager for AAA Northway, USA explained: "People need to pay attention to the fine details of their coverage. For example, the airline insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, like if you booked a flight with a broken leg and for whatever reason that broken leg prevented you from being able to take the trip.
"Generally vendor insurance on cruises allows a cancellation for any reason, while airline insurance tends to be more particular," Nowakowski said.
Ed Plog, owner of Empress Travel and Cruises in Glens Falls, USA commented that knowing what is covered and what the restrictions are, are the most important things when purchasing travel insurance.
In the US, passengers with tickets for bankrupt airline Delta may not be able to insure their tickets as the company's pilots are threatening to go on strike.
