A number of holidaymakers aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) cruise ship have been affected by a gastrointestinal virus.The highly infectious virus is common aboard cruise ships and nearly 300 travellers aboard the liner were found to be infected after it docked at San Francisco.
Of the 1,652 passengers aboard, 276 holidaymakers and 28 staff were affected by the bug.
Symptoms of the norovirus bug - which usually last a few days - include vomiting, diarrhoea, mild fever, aches and chills.
Staff from the US Centres for Disease Control boarded the vessel at Acapulco and instructed crew members in sanitisation procedures.
A recent study by AXA revealed that 4.5 million people opted for cruise holidays last year.
"In the excitement of booking a trip many people forget to buy their [travel insurance] or wrongly assume that they don't need it," commented Nick Kidd, head of lifestyle protection at the company.
"The reality is you don't know what could happen to you whilst on holiday."
The QE2 is currently sailing to Hawaii on the second leg of its cruise.
