New research finding that nearly one in ten people have been affected by crime whilst on holiday has urged one insurer to highlight the necessity for holiday insurance. The study carried out by Lloyds TSB found that for the year so far the total cost to holidaymakers could be as high as £200 million.
One third of those surveyed said that they had items stolen from their accommodation, while eight per cent said that belongings had been stolen whilst on the beach.
Phil Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "Although we're all aware of the risks of foreign travel, when we're actually on holiday it seems we can slip into a false sense of security.
"With the summer months over, many of us will be coming home realising we could have done much more to deter potential thieves.
"For those who don't even have insurance to cover the costs, the reality could be even more sobering.
He added: "It is absolutely vital that anyone travelling abroad checks, checks and checks again, that they're insured."
More than half said that they had money stolen, whilst 15 per cent returned home without their digital camera and over ten per cent without their mobile phone.
