A new code of practice has been launched to protect holidaymakers if their dream trip turns into a nightmare. Compensation should be able to be obtained more easily under the rules launched on Thursday by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
Although travellers will often have compensation allowances incorporated into their travel insurance, the rules will ensure that all ABTA consumers will have greater rights.
Commenting on the new code, Keith Bretton, head of corporate affairs at ABTA, said: "More and more consumers demand a dream holiday, and ABTA's code of conduct sets down standards that guarantee the best of practices within the travel industry."
Under the rules, those travelling with ABTA members are guaranteed access to low-cost dispute arbitration should things go wrong, a disciplinary committee to deal with members who have broken the rules and a set of model terms and conditions.
At present ABTA's members account for 90 per cent of package holidays taken each year.
