UK holidaymakers have lost or had stolen £1.5 billion worth of property abroad, in the past three years, research by a holiday insurance provider shows.Direct Line Travel Insurance reports that 12 per cent of Britons have had over £500 worth of property stolen in the last three years, with a further 11 percent having lost possessions worth that amount.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, money, wallets and credit cards were the items most often stolen, with clothes sunglasses and cameras the items most often misplaced, according to the report.
The research also found that ten per cent of victims of theft and 15 per cent of those who had lost items did not purchase holiday insurance, and Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance, expressed concerns that holidaymakers would not be able to replace items lost when they return home.
"The summer holiday is many people's largest annual purchase but it can be ruined by loss or theft," he said
"We would advise all holidaymakers to protect themselves by taking simple, sensible precautions and by making sure they are insured against any loses in case the worst happens," he added.
This research into those who lose property without being covered by single trip or annual holiday insurance comes alongside reports that many Britons are borrowing money on credit cards to pay for the costs of their trips abroad.
