Three in four Brits fail to take out holiday insurance when they take a short break in the UK it has bee revealed and 44 per cent admit to travelling abroad without travel insurance cover. A new report from online insurance agent Swiftcover.com has also shown that younger travellers are most likely to put themselves at risk, with three in five travellers under the age of 30 choosing to travel abroad without travel insurance cover.
Director of swiftcover.com, Tina Shortle, said: "It is staggering to see that such huge numbers of travellers place themselves at risk – be it within the UK or abroad.
"It is all too easy to adopt an 'it'll never happen to me' attitude, but accidents and ill health sadly do happen and the financial implications can be severe."
Some travellers choose to take the risk on longer trips as well, with 16 per cent of those surveyed admitting to having taken a longer holiday in Europe without holiday insurance cover and 13 per cent of the population believing the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will provide adequate cover.
The figures show that 19 per cent of people fail to take out holiday insurance because they don't believe they are likely to make a claim while 15 per cent believe travel insurance is too expensive.
However, if someone fell seriously ill without trave insurance the cost of an air ambulance back to the UK from Spain, for example would cost £12,000.
