Millions of Brits are severely risking their health by not taking vital jabs when travelling to tropical countries according to a YouGov survey. The poll found that one in six Brits, three million people, who travelled to a malarial country in the last year, did not take the recommended vaccination.
The major reasons for this were because they thought their stay was too short to be able to catch a disease or that they simply thought that it would not happen to them.
Worryingly one in ten of people interviewed who had visited a tropical island said that they had not taken out any travel insurance to cover them.
Direct Line travel insurance spokesman, Chris Price, said: "The last decade has seen a steady increase in travel to Asia, Africa and South America - destinations where serious diseases, including malaria, are common.
"We would urge all people to seek health advice eight weeks before travelling - although you can still get advice even at the last minute - and to ensure they have adequate travel insurance should the worst happen."
Figures from the department of health say that 2,000 holidaying Brits catch malaria each year with nine people dying as a result of the illness.
