Scores of Britons are planning to holiday abroad this summer in order to avoid the World Cup, a new survey has claimed. Research for American Express shows that 12 per cent of the population plans to take a break from the football, compared to the two per cent who are going to Germany to watch it.
"If England gets knocked out of the World Cup we are expecting a rush of last minute bookings," said Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services.
"Yet amidst the rush to getaway it is easy to overlook travel insurance," she warned, adding that air ambulances in popular destinations can cost £16,000 to the uninsured.
While people may go to the pub to watch the matches, Ms Field claimed that travel insurance for those avoiding the football can cost less than a round of drinks.
Only 28 per cent of people said that they planned to stay in for football, while others stated that they plan to holiday once England are out, or are travelling where they can watch matches.
With the World Cup influencing this summer's travel plans, whether by delaying holidays or creating earlier bookings, consumers are urged to remember taking out travel insurance in the rush abroad.
