One in four Brits are happy to leave their beach bag unattended while on holiday, leaving themselves exposed to theft, whether they have holiday insurance or not, according to a new survey.The report by Norwich Union into Brits' beach habits revealed that the average beach bag nowadays contains more than £500 worth of goods, although less than one in ten people were aware of the value of their bag's contents.
According to the survey, 18 to 24-year-olds are most likely to have the most expensive items on the beach, with more than 90 per cent keeping their mobile phone with them, three out of four carrying a digital camera and 72 per cent taking their MP3 player with them.
Travel product manager at Norwich Union, Dawn McMullan, said: "Our evidence suggests that the simple beach bag, once just for towels and sunscreen, has become a glamorous fashion accessory packed with expensive items which make them rich pickings for opportunist thieves.
"Holidaymakers also appear to be severely underestimating the value of their belongings, which means that if they do become a victim of theft, they could find themselves under-insured."
Watches, credit cards and designer sunglasses were also among the expensive items left lying unattended in beach bags.
