Workers at Auckland airport are set to go on strike this week after their pay rise demands were not met.The Auckland International Airport Company has only offered an increase of 3.5 per cent, not the six per cent that it had claimed.
Andrew Little, national secretary at the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, said: "The pay offer on the table is 3.5 per cent. This company is awash with cash - so much so that it has given directors a 66 per cent pay increase and shareholders a 50 per cent dividend increase. Our members work hard to help to generate those profits, and believe that they are entitled to a decent pay rise too."
New Zealand is currently experiencing plenty of tourist attention, as the British Lions rugby team has been touring the country for the last few weeks.
The final two matches of the tour are due to take place in Auckland, known as the City of Sails, so the volatile nature of airport relations could prove troublesome, and holiday insurance will be vital for visitors.
