Industrial action by baggage handlers and cleaners at Auckland airport this weekend has caused disruption to international flights to and from the New Zealand city. Tourists will be hoping they have adequate holiday insurance in place, as airlines including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Pacific Blue, Thai Airways and Garuda were all affected by the strike.
It is thought that 80 employees out of 225 employed by Menzies Aviation walked away from their work in protest at their low wages, demanding a rise of $5,500.
Mike Sweeney, Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union Auckland director, said: "All these people want is a decent living wage that recognises their skill and dedication."
"The airlines have to understand too that they are dealing with a company that is not paying its staff properly."
The workers also planned to stage a protest outside the airport, and Mr Sweeney apologised for disruption to people's travel plans as a result of the action, saying it was necessary to make their employer take notice.
