The main square in Athens was rocked by a bomb explosion on Monday morning, causing slight damage and injuring two people. Exploding outside the finance ministry at six am local time, the bomb is thought to have been attached to a motorcycle left close to the building in Syntagma Square.
"Initial evidence shows the explosion was triggered by a home-made explosive device placed outside the ministry," a police spokeswoman said.
It is the second bomb attack on a government building in the past six months; in June the Labour Ministry was bombed by a group calling themselves the Revolutionary Struggle, reports Reuters.
A Greek daily newspaper received an anonymous tip-off roughly 30 minutes before the blast, although no group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Fringe groups, including anarchists, have attacked Athens in the past, although police officials said Monday's bomb was more powerful than previous explosions.
The explosion coincides with a week of heavy strike action in Greece, which has been called for due to changes in public sector contracts.
