Winter storms have wreaked havoc in Canada, with heavy snowfalls, wind and ice causing disruption to both residents and travellers. Most flights have been cancelled at Halifax International Airport and St. John's Airport, while the Confederation Bridge between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island (PEI) was closed.
Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland have been the worst affected areas; schools, businesses and government offices have been forced to close and motorists have been advised to stay off the roads.
Roughly two feet of snow is expected to fall on Cape Breton island, with weather forecasters warning that Canada is experiencing a "significant blizzard".
Winds are expected to add to the chaos, Newfoundland in particular is set to experience winds of up to 120km per hour, the London Free Press reports.
Much of Europe and Russia has suffered from similar weather; freezing conditions and heavy snowfalls has caused frustrating delays for travellers as a number of airports have been forced to cancel flights.
