Airline delays worsen

24 February 2006  One in ten flights in and out of the UK last summer was at least an hour late, new figures show.

Newly published data from the Air Transport Users' Council reveals that 10.9 per cent of all flights in and out of the UK's major airports were delayed by more than 60 minutes between April and October last year.

This represents the worst performance since 2002, with delays increasing over past years. In 2004 9.3 per cent of planes were over an hour late, with the figure for 2003 standing at 7.8 per cent.

On average, travellers could expect to incur delays of 28 minutes, up from 23.4 the year before, highlighting the need for travel insurance.

Tina Tietjen, chairman of the Air Transport Users' Council, described the council's disappointment at the figures, saying that it had hoped that new EU rules for compensating delays would have improved the airlines' performance.

"We are disappointed to report that this has not happened. We appreciate that delays can be caused by a number of external factors, but a significant proportion of delays are within the control of airlines," she said.

It was found that half the problems could be attributed to air traffic control.

Thomsonfly was one of the best-performing airlines, with 6.4 per cent of its flights delayed for more than an hour. Air Alliance Europe fared worse, with excessive delays on 34.5 per cent of flights.
