ABI: Millions of travellers could benefit from holiday insurance reform

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed that up to 4.5 million travellers would benefit from a reform of guidelines legislating on the sale of holiday insurance by travel agents and tour operators.Changes suggested by the ABI include the setting up of an industry code to ensure best practice from agents, in addition to extending the remit of the ombudsman to cover holiday insurance sold as part of a travel package.
The association also recommends giving local authority trading standards the power to regulate the sale of single trip or annual holiday insurance policies through tour operators and travel agents.
Jane Milne, head of property and travel insurance at the ABI, said: "Our proposals will ensure that everyone buying travel insurance enjoys the proper level of protection while also maintaining a thriving market."
She added that the holiday insurance market is very competitive in the UK, with there being only a small risk of consumers travelling with inappropriate cover.
Last November, economic secretary to the Treasury Ed Balls reported increasing consumer and industry concern regarding the regulation of the holiday insurance market and launched a public review into the issue.
